SouthLight Healthcare is a non-profit substance abuse and mental health prevention, education and treatment agency.  We provide behavioral and medical therapies for addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions.

The primary role of The Prevention Specialist is to provide prevention related educational information/activities to students attending prevention classes on behalf of Southlight Healthcare as well as administrative support to the program as a whole.  This position provides both direct educational services to students as well as prevention program development and support. This is a part-time, seasonal position averaging 12-20 hours-per week, 3:30 pm - 7:00 pm, as needed with an eight weeks break during the summer months.    




  • Provide classroom, community presentations and projects concerning alcohol drugs, and life skills using evidence based curriculum. 
  • Implement activities and strategies consistent with the risk and protective models and with other research-based approaches to prevention planning.  
  • Provides general information to individuals and families on Southlight's programs and services.  
  • Drive safely to each sites/school, as well as to travel throughout the community. 
  • Verify the attendance and participation of students in classes 
  • Coordinate and set up materials and equipment for each site 


  • Develop and design educational materials in variety of formats, including audio, video, PowerPoint, and print 
  • Complete and submit monthly activity report to supervisor. 
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. 

As Needed: 

  • Participate in training and professional development activities for the agency. 



Educational and Experience  

  • Bachelor's Degree 



  • CSAC- Certified Substance Abuse Counselor


Excellent working knowledge of: 

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc) 
  • Presentation equipment 
  • Written and verbal communication 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required 

  • One year of human services experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Professional upbeat demeanor 
  • Client centered 
  • Ability to multi-task  
  • Bilingual preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills 
  • Flexibility with accepting new tasks 
  • Consistent reliability and punctuality 
  • Ability to de-escalate tense situations 
  • Present a positive public image 
  • Ability to work productively as a cooperative team member and independently - with limited supervision 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and written instructions  
  • Employees are required to use their personal automobile while conducting official business and possess a valid North Carolina Non-commercial Driver's License. 



Supervision Received  

Work is overseen by the Program Supervisor and indirectly by the Division Director. This position does receive daily supervision the first three months of employment and monthly supervision after satisfactory completion of the Introductory Performance Period.  



Physical Effort Required 

This positon requires moving boxes of paperwork around the office, filing, and storage of paper records, and electronic equipment (30 lbs.)

  • The ability to move about in a school or office environment 
  • The ability to travel throughout the community  
  • The ability to stand for extended amounts of time to teach lessons and community health fairs
